How It Sparked

ReKindle started with me wanting better candles.

Looking at the available options left me feeling kind of stuck—either cheaper candles made with paraffin wax (one too many carcinogenic toxins) and metal-core wicks (burning metal indoors seems… bad?), or overpriced soy candles with mixed results. Oftentimes I’d invest in a pricey candle to find it burned unevenly or had no scent, which frustrated me to no end.

Finding myself home more often than usual last year, I decided to give candle-making a try. When everything arrived, I set it all up and was excited to get started. Shortly after measuring my wax, I realized that I had bought everything I needed—except candle holders, which I had somehow completely overlooked. I spent a few minutes kicking myself when I realized that a pickle jar is very similarly shaped to a candle, and luckily for me, I rarely have fewer than two (or three) in my fridge. The pickles were unceremoniously relocated into a Tupperware and after a bit of scrubbing and delabeling, my jars were ready.

After pouring my candles, I did a quick inventory of my kitchen and realized that many of my food jars would make excellent candle jars—and the idea for ReKindle was officially born.
